Greenwatch uses advocacy as a tool in implementing its activities.

Greenwatch leverages advocacy as a key tool to implement its activities, promote environmental governance, and uphold environmental rights. Our advocacy efforts are aimed at influencing policy, enhancing public participation, and ensuring justice in environmental matters.

Advocacy Tools and Strategies:

  • Networking with Civil Society Organizations;

    Collaboration strengthens our impact. Greenwatch actively participates in Uganda’s civil society networks to promote shared goals and collective action.

    • Environment and Natural Resources Civil Society Network (ENR-CSO):

      Greenwatch is part of the Governance Thematic Working Group, addressing governance issues in the environmental sector. This group plays a vital role in shaping advocacy interventions and monitoring government performance.

    • Civil Society Coalition on Oil and Gas in Uganda (CSCO)

    • Land Justice Sub-Committee of the Access to Justice Working Group (Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs):

      This committee focuses on enhancing access to justice for land-related issues, bringing together government institutions and civil society organizations.

  • Democratic Mechanisms;

    Greenwatch engages with democratic processes to advocate for environmental justice:

    • Submissions to Parliamentary Committees, including the Parliamentary Forum on Climate Change and the Committee on Natural Resources

    • Utilizing freedom of information laws to enhance transparency and accountability

  • Access to information

    In partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Greenwatch participated in the Access to Information in Africa Project (ATI in Africa).

    Empowering communities with knowledge is central to our mission. We provide information on environmental rights, laws, and policies to individuals and organizations on a pro-bono basis.

    • Handbook on Environmental Law (Volumes I & II): A comprehensive reference continually updated to reflect new laws and policies.
    • Environmental Law Casebook: Compiles recent environmental cases from Uganda and other jurisdictions to guide legal practitioners and scholars.

  • Partnering with The Kenneth Kakuru Treeplanting Initiative

    Founded in honor of the late Hon. Justice Kenneth Kakuru, a pioneering environmental advocate and founder of Greenwatch, this initiative embodies his lifelong commitment to environmental conservation.
