Concept Note:
- Rationale for the training:
Greenwatch, having dedicated over five years to training the judiciary on climate justice, identified a significant gap in the field of public interest environmental litigation a shortage of lawyers specializing in this crucial area. Recognizing the need to cultivate expertise and commitment among the next generation of legal professionals, Greenwatch has embarked on a strategic partnership with the Uganda Law Society. This collaboration aims to train a select group of young advocates who are keen to build careers in environmental practice and climate change law. The training is designed to equip young advocates with the necessary skills and networks to thrive and effect change within this dynamic field.

The training is designed to spark a deep, enduring commitment to climate justice among participants. It aims to transform concern into action by empowering attendees with the knowledge, tools, and inspiration needed to advocate for equitable solutions to climate change. This theme emphasizes the critical role of passion in driving change and the importance of informed advocacy in shaping a sustainable future.
- Key Components of the Training:
Educational Sessions:
- Understanding Climate Justice: An introductory session that covers the basics of climate action, climate litigation and climate justice, including its definition, significance, and key issues.
- Global Impact Narratives: Presentations on how climate change affects diverse populations differently, highlighting the importance of a justice-based approach.
Skills Development Workshops:
- Effective Advocacy Techniques: Training sessions on how to effectively lobby for policy changes, engage with stakeholders, and utilize media for advocacy.
- Legal Tools for Climate Justice: For legal professionals, a deep dive into how the law can be leveraged to advance climate justice.
Inspirational Talks:
- Stories from the Front Lines: Featuring activists and lawyers who have made significant impacts in the fight for climate justice.
- Visionary Leadership: Talks from thought leaders who inspire through their visionary approaches to global environmental challenges.

- Mentorship Pairings: Connecting emerging professionals with experienced mentors in the field of climate justice.
- Collaborative Projects: Facilitating partnerships among participants to initiate ongoing climate justice projects beyond the workshop.
Commitment to Action:
- Action Plan Development: Each participant develops a personal action plan, outlining specific steps they will take to contribute to climate justice in their community or field.
- Commitment Ceremony: A closing event where participants voluntarily create a cohort of young advocates for climate justice, fostering a sense of accountability and community.
- Goal of the training:
The goal of this training is not only to educate and inform but also to ignite a passionate commitment to climate justice among participants. By the end of the training, attendees should feel empowered to take concrete, impactful actions that contribute to equitable climate solutions and to inspire others to join in their efforts.

Brief profiles of our resource person
| Dr. Mutesasira holds a Ph.D in Environmental Law from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and currently serves as the Dean Faculty of Law at Uganda Christian University. He has published books and articles on environmental law, biosafety and biotechnology law, environmental rights, climate change, and wildlife. He has also undertaken a number of trainings on environmental governance, natural resource governance, environmental and social impact assessment, natural resources inventory/records management, and capacity building in the environmental conservation of local governments. Dr. Mutesasira has been a consistent facilitator at Judicial trainings on climate justice organized by Greenwatch in partnership with the Judicial Training Institute. |
| Bernard is a judge of the High court of Uganda, he holds Master and bachelor of laws degrees from Makerere University and a Post Graduate Diploma in legal practice from the Law Development Center. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he was the Managing Partner at BNB Advocates, a Ugandan law firm where he practiced climate change law, environmental law and policy among others. He played a vital role in advising the Government of Uganda regarding drafting of the National Climate Change Act, 2021 and as well represented the National Social Security Fund in a land dispute in the High Court of Uganda. |
