During my brief yet impactful time at Greenwatch Limited, I had the privilege of immersing myself in the world of environmental advocacy and legal work. Though my contribution may have been small, the experience was incredibly enriching, offering me valuable insights into the intersection of law, environmental conservation, and the role of young professionals in driving change. In this blog, I’ll share the highlights of my journey and the lessons I learned along the way.

When I first joined Greenwatch, I was eager to contribute to the organization’s mission of promoting environmental justice. My role involved assisting with the Young Lawyers planning, a unique opportunity that allowed me to collaborate with peers who shared my passion for environmental advocacy. Despite my limited experience, the team welcomed me with open arms and provided continuous support, making the experience incredibly educational.

One of the most significant aspects of my time at Greenwatch was the opportunity to learn from experienced legal professionals. I spent a considerable amount of time reading through various environmental cases and textbooks, which was truly eye-opening. Whenever I encountered something I didn’t understand, my colleagues were always there to patiently explain the intricacies of the legal proceedings, especially my boss, Samantha, and Amanda. They did their best to explain everything to me in a way I could understand as a 17-year-old.

One of the highlights of my time at Greenwatch was contributing to a brief case study on Uganda’s forests. Although I was only there for a short time and managed to write just three pages, this project allowed me to dive deeper into the environmental issues facing my country and understand the legal frameworks in place to protect our natural resources. Through this work, I gained a profound appreciation for Uganda’s rich environmental heritage and the urgent need to conserve it. The process of researching and writing the case study was a valuable learning experience that enhanced my understanding of environmental law and policy in Uganda.

But the most memorable aspect of my time at Greenwatch was the people. The team at Greenwatch Limited was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive. They created an environment where learning was encouraged, and no question was too small or insignificant. Their willingness to share their expertise and guide me through the complexities of environmental law was instrumental in my growth during this period. The kindness and professionalism of my colleagues left a lasting impression on me and motivated me to continue studying to become an environmentalist. I hope that one day I can work in a place just like Greenwatch.
